What You Should Know Before Choosing an Air Ambulance

By: Angel MedFlight Contributor

Summary: Finding the right air ambulance can be a stressful process, which is why we have created some tips to help you know what to look for in make the right choice.

Angel MedFlight is a trusted air ambulance provider.  But what does it actually take to be trusted in the medical transport industry?   Read below to see why we stand out, as well as some other great tips to keep in mind before choosing an air ambulance for you or your loved one.

Tip #1: Don’t believe everything you see online

Most searches begin online, and as you might know, you can’t believe everything you read.  Several companies will promote planes on their website that may not even be an option for the patient.  If you are searching online, make sure to read the fine print and see what is really included in the flight.  If it is still unclear, call the business and ask the right questions.

Tip #2: Ask the right questions

So what do you ask when you call in?  Well, here are some standard questions that a trusted company will know the answer to:

Will I be riding in a prop plane or a fixed wing?

This is an important fact to know as the prop planes are much smaller, and have less avionics.  They also only use one pilot and fly at much lower altitudes.  Angel MedFlight only uses fixed-wing Learjets with the latest in avionics and every flight guarantees 2 pilots and 2 medical staff on board.  The larger planes are able to fly higher to avoid bad weather as well as avoid the commercial flight path.  Unlike prop planes, Learjets can pressurize the cabin to help stabilize the patient.

Do you own the planes? Do you know the maintenance history?

To avoid higher costs, most companies contract out planes which means they are usually unsure about the maintenance history of the aircraft.  At Angel MedFlight, our Learjets are operated and maintained by our own staff and currently hold and ARGUS Gold rating.

Is your crew hired or contracted?

Again to save money, most companies contract out the medical crew and pilots.  This can be dangerous as some crews are coming off 12-hour shifts at a hospital to take a medical flight.  Angel MedFlight employs full-time pilots, paramedics and nurses and always has 2 pilots and 2 medical staff on every flight.

Is there room for a loved one to ride along?

Other companies do not allow for another person to ride along because their planes are too small.  This makes an additional cost for the patient to buy an extra commercial plane ticket.  Angel MedFlight allows one loved-one to ride along as we want our patient to feel as comfortable as possible.

Will you help me through the insurance process?

Most companies do not have the staff or the resources to help fight insurance claims.  Angel MedFlight is fully staffed with a legal and claims department to get your flight covered from the very first step so you don’t have to stress about the details.  It is our One Touch Promise® that we will see your case all the way through and advocate on your behalf.  This allows you or your family member to focus on what’s important.

Tip #3: Know who is on the other end of the phone

A lot of other services have a mass call-center.  Angel MedFlight has a team of nurses and case managers that personally handled every aspect of the flight to make it seamless.

Angel MedFlight is always here to help.  Please call and ask us any questions, day or night (877) 264-3570.  To see more, watch this video before you choose.
